Mother’s Day is always bittersweet for our team at Egg Donor & Surrogate Solutions. We are excited for our former intended moms who are celebrating their very first Mother’s Day, yet we also know that it’s a difficult day for intended parents (IPs) who are still on the journey to creating their happy family. If you’re the latter, we hope you will do whatever brings you the most peace and comfort, whether it’s indulging in a day of self-care, staying off social media or spending the day with those you love most.
If this is your first Mother’s Day, and you are thinking about how to celebrate, consider these ideas from some of our former IPs who shared their favorite Mother’s Day traditions:
Going on a picnic with my daughter and husband, just the three of us. It’s become our tradition, and I look forward to it every year.
Celebrating that I’m now a mother with my husband and son. There were so many years where the holiday was heartbreaking to experience. Now, it’s a time to celebrate that I’m actually a mother. A cup of coffee that I can actually finish or a spa treatment doesn’t hurt either!
Just being with my son – I love him so much. Ideally, I get extra snuggles and maybe he asks me to stay with him after he’s put to bed, and we get some one-on-one time.
My husband surprises me each year with matching mother and son shirts. It’s a fun tradition that I look forward to!
Other ideas for how to spend the day:
- Rest: Ask your partner to get up with the baby while you get a few extra hours of sleep or take an afternoon nap.
- Enjoy a special meal: Whether it’s breakfast in bed, brunch at your favorite restaurant or a picnic in the park, make sure someone else is doing the cooking!
- Family fun day: Visit your local museum, aquarium or botanical gardens, go for a hike, spend the day at the beach or lake, take a day trip – the options are endless.
- Pamper yourself: Read a book, watch a movie, take a bubble bath, get a mani/pedi or a massage. The idea is to do something for yourself that will help you relax and unwind.
- Capture the memories: Your first Mother’s Day is a day you’ll want to remember. Document the day with photos and in a journal so that years from now, you can look back and reminisce on your special day.
However you choose to celebrate, we wish you a very Happy Mother’s Day full of memories that will last a lifetime!
